I'm willing to admit that some people do bad things for political
reasons, but this one has me stumped:
People with no health insurance saying they'd rather throw their money
away on a fine than spend their money for insurance. Don't these people use emergency rooms?
Gallup.com's recent survey reveals that 28% of the 48 million American
adults with no health insurance say they're going to pay the fine on January 1,
instead of getting health coverage as required by the Affordable Care Act. (OK,
now even President Obama calls it Obamacare….).
The fine in 2014 is $95 per person, or 1% of your family income,
whichever is HIGHER. The fines get bigger in 2015, and in 2016 the maximum fine
will be 2.5% of family income.
The fine could bite you in the….wallet. Granted, it's a legal option,
but….?
What's going on with the folks who say they prefer to pay the penalty?
Here's a clue: Gallup says only 15% of the Democrats with no health
insurance say they will choose the fine, but 45% of uninsured Republicans say
they'll pay the penalty instead of getting health coverage.
Let's get to the nitty gritty:
If you refuse to buy health insurance as required by Obamacare, then
the next time you're in an auto accident and you break a lot of bones and get
torn up inside and there's a lot of blood and stuff, you should stay conscious
long enough to ask the ambulance paramedic to pin this note to your shirt:
"Dear doctors and nurses: I didn't bother buying health insurance,
so I can't pay for the surgery and critical care you're going to give me, but I
hope you do a real good job anyway."
If you can hold a pen without too much pain, it would be a nice touch
to write "Thanks!" in big letters and sign your name.
