Early noodling about the Kindle

Amazon released the first Kindle for sale in November 2007. You remember that, sure.

You may not know that the concept for Kindle had been floating around for quite a few years. A long time, in fact.

Here’s a photo of the first prototype, admittedly in the very, very early stages of development:

Word to the deniers

Yaaasss, believe it or not, there are still some folks who won’t admit that a bear does it in the woods.

I’m here to tell you, they do it, dude, been doing it for a long time, all of ‘em….

If you need proof:

Stretch goals

I started to ignore this little gem, but then I decided to be an advocate:

 Grownup TO DOs:

1. Going to bed early
2. Not leaving the house
3. Not going to that party

Those childhood punishments have become my grownup goals.

This is not bogus.

Redefining “comfortable”….

See, there’s “comfortable,” and then you can step up to “aaaaahhh”……

At first glance this may seem a bit creepy, however, keep in mind that the built-in book light is not visible....

Okay, it’s “O. K.”—OK?

Probably you know that languages evolve, and words and patterns of speech and even pronunciations change over time, sometimes rapidly….

Sometime when you’re in a full body cast you can read up on The Great Vowel Shift in the English language in England (roughly 1350-1600).

Today’s lesson is a bit less formidable: raise your hand if you know when “O.K.” became part of American English.

Okay, here’s the answer:

In the 1830s, some young folks with a bit of education thought it was groovy to misspell words and then use the resulting abbreviations as slang (guess who probably didn’t quite know what the kids were talking about….). Such as “OW” meaning “all right” (the misspelled form was “oll wright”) and “KG” for “No go” (“Know go”).  Cool, right? Know, really.

So, “O.K.” showed up….that is, “oll korrect” derived from “all correct.” Wicked.

It first appeared in print—as part of a joke—on March 23, 1839, in The Boston Morning Post. You gotta believe that early 19th century journalists had the same awesome sense of humor that pervades the news media today.

So, like, our constantly changing language, GP, y’know?

(“go phigure.” You knew that, right? Cool.)

The wisdom of Sam Levenson (part 3)

“One of the virtues of being very young is
that you don't let the facts
get in the way of your imagination.”

Sam Levenson    1911-1980
American humorist, writer, teacher, TV celeb and journalist

I am an insufferable fan of the facts.

Imagination also gets my vote, and sometimes the twain need not interfere with each other.

I have a grandfatherly perspective on this. I love to hear my kids spinning a tale or making up a song on the fly. It’s a wonderment to hear their freelance explanations of Santa Claus and rain and why flowers die and how the astronauts can survive in space.

Their cautionary tales about animal parents taking care of their young are sophisticated in their concern, and carefree in their attribution of human values and familial love….sometimes I feel like I’m on a mission to soak up enough free-range delight and fanciful understanding to keep my brain and my heart from getting older, at least for an hour or two….

I never tell the kids a lie.

Sometimes I collaborate in keeping the dried-up facts in the back pocket for a while.

I still don’t know who shot J. R.

It was 35 years ago.

More than 3 out of 4 American households—and half of the adults in this great land—tuned in to “Dallas” to finally learn who shot J. R.

Around the world, 350 million people watched the first episode of the third season of the blockbuster primetime “drama” to get the low-down on the low-down skulker who did the deed.

Some people didn’t watch the show. Like me. You can read all about it here. I’ll be honest, I skimmed the story on History.com and I still don’t know the name of the shooter.

Ignorance shall be my penalty.

I’m gonna guess that the number of folks in the U. S. who know that name is larger than the number of folks who know when the Constitution was ratified, and larger than the number of folks who know what “arsenal of democracy” means.

Go figure.

Trick-or-Treat for Boomers….

So.

It’s Halloween time.

You’re a Baby Boomer, you like candy, and you still feel young at heart.

Take note.

It's no problem.

If you need to go back to the house for a nap after a while, no problem.

Sit down before you read this….

Saturday Night Live premiered 40 years ago in October 1975.

Omigosh.

Perhaps you were in bliss before you read that, forgetting all the years that piled up since you laughed your ass off watching the newly-hatched antics of Chevy and Belushi and Gilda and Garrett and Jane and Laraine.

They hid nothing from the camera or the viewer. George Carlin was the guest host on the first night. That takes you back, right? Steve Martin hosted the show 14 times. Not enough.

For my taste, no cast and no crew of writers have ever, ever come close to matching the delicately balanced chaos of fun and needlepoint roasting that the original gang cooked up week after week.

Sure, Doug and Wendy Whiner were good, and Church Lady was a snootful, and The Ambiguously Gay Duo broke a few hearts….and the 1975 lineup didn’t have Sarah Palin to fool around with….

But all else fades to black when you savor these words:
"Roseanne Roseannadanna"

Gimme Chevy and Jane and John B. and Gilda and the bunch anytime, even if I’m too old to fall off the couch laughing….
