Here’s some recent
data on our fellow Americans who are homeless:
It costs about $87 a
day to keep a homeless person in jail.
It costs about $28 a
day to take care of a homeless person in a shelter.
Of course the
problem of the homeless is not one-dimensional. I don’t suggest that any part
of it is easily solved.
It’s obvious that
our public policy and our private charitable impulses should be focused on
shelters for the homeless, not the hoosegow.
