The U.S. government
spends more than $1.5 billion a year buying clothing that's made overseas.
That's a shocker to me.
I'm not a simplistic
advocate of "Buy American," but 1,500,000,000 is a lot of greenbacks
going into the pockets of workers and factory owners outside the United States.
What's the government
buying? You name it—uniforms for airport
security officers, those olive shirts the forest rangers wear, the camouflage
outfits worn by military personnel, stuff like that.
So, the New York Times
(December 23, 2013) says, Uncle Sam is one of the world's biggest purchasers of
clothing.
Government purchasing
agents are chasing the best price around the world, conceptually there's
nothing wrong with that.
But in our current
economic distress, I'm thinking we'd be better off if a lot of that $1.5
billion were spent right here in the states.

Included in your list is the USA Olympic teams uniforms! Go to Wal-mart and try to find anything manufactured in the USA. You won't! What manufacturing industry do we have left in this country?? Not much. I know China wouldn't use that against us. Who is running this economy any ways? Is service jobs, gov't jobs going to sustain us? Don't know. Thanks for bringing an important issue forward.
